Definition
Positive space refers to the areas of a design or image occupied by the main subjects, objects, or focal elements — as opposed to negative space (the empty areas around them). The relationship between positive and negative space defines the visual balance, hierarchy, and clarity of a composition. In thumbnail design, the creator's face or a key object occupies positive space, while the background and surrounding areas form negative space. Understanding the interplay between positive and negative space is fundamental to effective visual communication.
