Gestalt

Also known as:Gestalt principlesGestalt psychology

Definition

Gestalt (from the German word for 'form' or 'shape') refers to a set of psychological principles that describe how humans perceive visual elements as unified wholes rather than collections of individual parts. The core Gestalt principles — proximity, similarity, continuity, closure, figure-ground, and common fate — explain why certain designs feel cohesive and others feel disjointed. For creators designing thumbnails, channel art, and marketing materials, applying Gestalt principles produces designs that are intuitively readable and visually compelling. Understanding Gestalt is the foundation of professional visual design.
