Engagement Farming

Also known as:Engagement BaitEngagement ManipulationBait Posting

Definition

The practice of creating content specifically designed to generate high volumes of engagement metrics — comments, shares, reactions, and replies — through low-effort, emotionally provocative, or deliberately controversial prompts, rather than through genuine value creation. Engagement farming tactics include posting divisive opinions, asking trivial questions, sharing outrage-inducing content, and creating false dilemmas that compel audiences to respond. While engagement farming can temporarily boost algorithmic distribution, it typically attracts low-quality audience relationships, damages brand credibility, and contributes to the degradation of platform discourse.
