Content License

Also known as:Usage LicenseMedia License

Definition

A Content License is a legal agreement that grants a third party specific rights to use, reproduce, distribute, or modify a creator's original content under defined conditions. Content licenses specify the scope of use (platforms, territories, duration), whether the license is exclusive or non-exclusive, and what compensation is owed. For creators, content licenses are central to brand deals, stock media sales, syndication agreements, and platform terms of service. Understanding the difference between a license (which retains ownership with the creator) and a content assignment (which transfers ownership) is critical for protecting long-term intellectual property rights.
