Definition
YouTube's short-form vertical video format, designed to compete with TikTok and Instagram Reels. Shorts are videos under 60 seconds (expandable to 3 minutes) filmed in vertical 9:16 aspect ratio. The Shorts feed operates on a separate algorithm from long-form YouTube content — Shorts views do not count toward standard watch time metrics and are monetized at a different (typically lower) RPM. For creators, Shorts can be a powerful top-of-funnel tool for reaching new audiences who may then discover your long-form content.
