Definition
In the context of Web3 and internet evolution theory, Read-Only describes the first generation of the web (Web1), in which users could consume content published by organizations and institutions but had no ability to create, publish, or interact with content themselves. In a creator economy context, Read-Only also describes audience members who consume content without engaging — watching videos, reading newsletters, or listening to podcasts without commenting, sharing, or subscribing. Understanding the ratio of Read-Only consumers to active engagers is important for interpreting engagement metrics accurately.
