Keyframe

Also known as:key frame

Definition

A keyframe is a specific point in a video timeline that defines the start or end state of an animation, transition, or effect. Video editing and motion graphics software interpolates the values between keyframes to create smooth movement. In animation, keyframes mark the principal poses drawn by lead animators, with in-between frames filled in by assistants or software. In video editing (Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro), keyframes control properties like opacity, scale, position, and audio volume over time.
