Definition
Audience Capture is a phenomenon where a creator progressively loses their authentic voice and creative autonomy as they become increasingly driven by what their audience demands, rather than what they genuinely want to create. The algorithm rewards content that gets engagement, which can train creators to produce increasingly extreme, sensationalized, or narrow content to satisfy audience expectations. Over time, the creator becomes a product of their audience rather than an independent voice, often leading to burnout, radicalization, or creative stagnation. Recognizing and resisting audience capture is a key principle of sustainable creator strategy.
